Top-line iMac or base-line Mac Pro?

Hey guys, I'm a video editor that works mostly with RED footage in Final Cut Pro and After Effects. I'm also a gamer running Bootcamp and Steam. I'm currently working on a 3 year old Macbook Pro and looking to upgrade by the end of the year. Here are my choices, I'm wondering if a new top of the line iMac will outperform the current base model of the Mac Pros for gaming and video work... or if the Mac Pro is the way to go.

    27" iMac
    3.4ghz Quad-Core i7
    2TB Serial ATA HD
    AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB
    $2,304 (Student)

    Mac Pro
    2.8ghz Quad-Core Xeon "Nehalem"
    2TB 7200 RPM HD
    ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB
    $2,614 (Student w/ no display)

I plan on buying RAM (and Mac Pro display) elsewhere so I did not include it in the specs. Thoughts? :)

Under the iChat preferences on the Video tab, at the bottom there is an option for audio from the internal mic or Line-in. It may say none too if you don't have an internal I think.

On the "One more thing" invitation page, you say iMac with "Frontpage;" I think you mean "front row?"

    If not, my apologies.

    your so imature...

I am trying to fit in? and yet i have no friends? lol

This is a forum this is the internet, my friends are people I see in person in my life.

It is a crappy idea, its stupid and just an annoyance to a company, besides that your a liar, you apparantly own an iPad then you dont? so what is it? you own one or your going to buy a refurb?

I dont trust you, so anything you post is crap to me.

And I cant afford a free iPad? that doesnt even make sense! go back to school. I actually paid for my iPad and all the other things I own while I do a job aswell as go to university which is a 2 hour ride there and another 2 hours back.

I am thinking about driving home next weekend from school so it's possible that I might attend the Leopard launch in Wellington. My parents live in Royal Palm Beach so it's not far. If I drive home, I'll come back and update my status so we can meet up there.

Indeed. I just spent 3-4 hours restoring my phone after updating to 4.3.2. I will update whence iOS 5 doth show itself.

Besides, I think the tracking thing is pretty neat :D

Have you ever looked at the location file that saves on your PC? If so, can you tell me where iTunes saves it?

    Thanks

It appears that OS X will truncate any password longer than 7 characters to only 8 characters. In other words, it's an 8-character overflow. This problem is global in that it affects the Login Window, Screen Effects, Keychain Access, and even network logon security. For anyone with long password phrases that have easily-guessable words in the first 8 characters, this is a problem. Since "MacintoshOSXIsMoreSecureThanMicrosoftWindows" only needs to be entered as "Macintosh", gaining unauthorized access is very simple with a common name attack. Of course, we all have passwords that are a combination of letters and numbers, including a mix of upper- and lower-case characters. ;)

    Conflicting information here. :)

So iOS 4.2 brought AirPlay video streaming to a few select Apple apps like iPod/Videos and YouTube. The Verizon iPhone should have been been able to do that from day one, as it shipped with iOS 4.2.5/4.2.6.

iOS 4.3 introduced support for AirPlay video streaming from Safari and third-party apps. iMovie for iOS is another one that requires iOS 4.3 for streaming projects via AirPlay.

So to settle this once and for all, can anybody with a Verizon iPhone double check to make sure they do have the AirPlay capabilities from 4.2 and NOT those from 4.3 with the new iOS 4.2.8? Remember, we're specifically talking about video here. Krevnik says that this is the case, but we'd like a few more data points to counteract claims that there has been a change.

We've seen just a couple reports claiming that video AirPlay has been added to the Verizon iPhone with 4.2.8, but we think it's confusion over the limited support that originally existed vs. what non-Verizon devices can do under 4.3.

The same thing happens when I run Skype on my 13" MBA. When I use Facetime, the heat and loud fans aren't really an issue. The only other time the fans crank up for me like that is when I'm doing intensive photo or video editing. So it seems to me that Skype really is just a CPU hog. I'm not sure if there's really anything you can do about that.

There is a minor difference - the new iMacs have an ambient light sensor which will provide ideal brightness whether you are in a dark or well-lit environment.

If you manually set the brightness, does it return? Perhaps the display was set too bright/dim for the conditions?

From Apple's site: "To conserve power and relieve eyestrain, a built-in ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the screen brightness on MacBook, MacBook Pro and iMac to suit the ambient light of whatever room youre in."

I do have an idea which could help Apple. If they want to hear it they can email me.

What is your opinion on Cisco and Apple's dispute?
I'm sure they are dying to hear your plan.

I say may the best man (company) win. To be honest, and this is just opinion, I think Cisco threw the "iPhone" out there because they knew the real iPhone was coming (as did we all) and wanted to bank on it somehow, just like I'm sure iPhone-related email addresses were swiped up recently too.

I could be wrong, but prove it.

Barcelona, beautiful city, lots to see, very chilled place.

Prague, quite a bit to see, cheap excellent food and beer.

Will I be able to put the retail version on a flash drive? Because my dvd drive is pretty much busted.

Yes, I did the same for my flatmate's 1st gen MacBook whose drive is also bust.

Would it be possible just to clone my Macbook 6,1 HDD and restore it to the HDD on the 1,1?

I'm not sure if this can be done without any problems.

Chaos struck London Underground's Northern Line at the start of this morning's rush when a driverless train broke away from the engine towing it and headed off into the tunnels under Camden towards the centre of the city. At 6:44am the engineering train broke its coupling near Archway station and rolled back down the hill towards oncoming passenger trains. Thanks to the Northern Line having multiple routes through the city control room staff quickly diverted passenger trains safely onto the line's Bank branch whilst the runaway was left to come to a rest at Warren Street station on the Charing Cross part of the network.

Sadly Ringo Starr did not provide commentary.
